Mary and The Towers is an ongoing film investigation into Viennese painter Marie Rosenthal’s looted works. Drawing from Nazi records obtained within Vienna University’s Jewish Studies Library as well internet archives, the film creates a semi-imagined history of Marie’s works, tracing their origins, through Marie’s death in the Holocaust, to the present day. Rosenthal is a great aunt of the filmmaker, and this investigation is part of a larger body of work that is an effort to track down the 83 Rosenthal oil paintings stolen by the Nazis. Beyond the personal connection, the film weaves together elements of military architecture, medieval Jewish mysticism, and 20th-century conspiracy theories.
